As the price of storage continues to drop, several technologies seem to be emerging to threaten tape as the frontrunner for long-term data storage needs. The two most predominant contenders are low-cost magnetic disk (e.g., Advanced Technology Attachment [ATA], Serial ATA) and optical disk (e.g., DVD, blue laser DVD enhancements ["Blu-ray"] and HD-DVD). Each of these technologies, however, has inherent limitations that will prevent them from becoming a replacement for tape in the foreseeable future.
