Key trends in data storage next year

This article will address several areas that will be a major storage focus for organisations in 2006, using both statistics from GlassHouse's 2005 Global Storage Security Survey, and a 2005 UK Data Protection Questionnaire. Vendors especially have continued to morph their businesses into more service-oriented operations, trying to give some additional value to their customers, instead of more problems through simply overlaying more and more technologies. One thing is for sure - the priority of data protection within the business will only increase in 2006. Read more

A Day in the Life of Mobile Data

Very few companies worry about the cost of replacing mobile devices, it's more about the value and amount of data that resides of mobile devices and the adverse consequences to the company if the data on these devices falls into the wrong hands. According to a recent Gartner study over 80% of new and critical data is now stored on mobile devices – so securing these devices is becoming a business necessity and one that can no longer be ignored. Storage Earns Its Keep For SMEs

When Premiership footballers started wearing nasal strips and dabbing menthol rub onto their shirts, it wasn't long before the lower professional divisions right down to Sunday league pitches were graced with Band-Aid clad players reeking of eucalyptus. Read more

An ILM vision for businesses

The concept of Information lifecycle management (ILM) was pioneered by StorageTek as long ago as October 2002 at our annual user conference, Forum. Enterprise data backups, are they compromising your security strategy?

This year, a number of widely publicised data security breaches have gained international attention. After such an incident, bringing a system into compliance with security regulations, notifying and appeasing unhappy customers and re-building confidence in a brand can be both a costly and time consuming process. Businesses are becoming more demanding in that they are seeking assurances that, in the event of any interruption to their operation, they will be able to retrieve their data, intact, real time and ready to continue operations. Also, we find ourselves in a new risk-aware business culture, which treats risk management as a topic in itself, with its own methods and experts. Read more

IP SANs

The convergence of SANs and IP networking is now an accomplished fact. Although IP-based SAN technology was not openly embraced by most traditional storage vendors, major vendors are now offering IP-based solutions for storage over distance and iSCSI for both storage and host connectivity. As it turns out, IP SANs complement traditional Fibre Channel storage network by breaking both distance and cost barriers that have kept the mass of the medium and small businesses out of the SAN market. HBAs Help Reseller Keep Up With Growth

About a year ago, ISC Networks Ltd. realized it had an enviable problem. While other portions of the tech industry were struggling, ISC's business, and its staff, were growing so fast it was outstripping the capabilities of the 700Gbytes of direct-attached storage on its servers running Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL Server. "Salesmen wanting to get stock information on our products, or placing an order, would sometimes have to wait for tens of seconds for the system to respond," says Enterprise Storage Business Manager Will Todd.
